Perceptual Mapping

Perceptual maps are visual tools that show how consumers perceive brands relative to one another on key dimensions that matter to consumers. They help you understand:

  • Is your brand positioned as intended?  Where does your brand sit in consumers’ minds compared with competitors? Does this align with management’s expectations?
  • Is there whitespace?  Are there open areas or unmet needs in the market where few brands are positioned? Could this represent an opportunity for new products or services?
  • Is your differentiation clear?  Do you know why your brand stands out or why it blends in? How can you improve your marketing communications and potentially reposition your brand to differentiate itself?
  • How are perceptions trending?  Are your marketing efforts shifting consumer perceptions in the intended direction?

In this example, respondents identified which hair care brands they associated with each attribute. They could check as many or as few brands as desired or could choose “none of these” if no brand is associated with an attribute.

  • Brand D stands alone and tends not to be associated strongly with any of the attributes.
  • The remaining brands fall into one of three groups: gentleness, fragrance, and nourishing.
  • The gentleness and nourishing groups have several other attributes associated with them.

Persuadable Research will design and analyze a custom perceptual mapping study that not only clarifies your brand’s true position but also translates those insights into clear, actionable strategies for differentiation, innovation, and growth.
